Plates mean Mixed Member Proportional, representing the NZ proportional voting system. As a local convener of the Electoral Reform Coalition, I used the plates on my vehicle during the period of the indicative and binding referendums on Electoral Reform in 1992 and 1993. The indicative referendum on various voting system options (FPTP, STV, MMP & SM) was held on 19th September 1992, the 99th anniversary of Women's Enfranchisement. The binding referendum on our future voting system was about Guy Fawkes in 1993. MMP won against the old unfair First Past The Post system after a grass roots education campaign was favored over an opposition campaign with negative emotive advertising showing hooded figures, crying babies and dinosaurs. Have a part of history and show support for our more enlightened and representative voting system.
